Hi and thanks for checking out Lastition Law! I’m Brittany Lastition, and I started this practice to serve clients that I love working with in a way they love working with me – and, more importantly, at reasonable rates that they are happy to pay. Sounds almost too good to be true, right? I don’t think so!
I went into this area of law (estate planning) after my family dealt with a bit of a mess upon my grandmother’s death. Despite her having had a proper estate plan in place, it seems she didn’t work very closely (or feel very comfortable? we can only guess) with her attorney because her plan had some holes and inconsistencies that lead to a major dispute in the family. My mission is to help other families avoid this nightmare by encouraging an open, comfortable relationship with your attorney (whether it’s me or someone else) so that your plans work when you need them to!
I serve families and individuals who care what happens to themselves, their assets, property or family, when something goes wrong, be it death or disability. The fact is, the majority of Americans are likely to face a period of incapacity during our lifetime, and we know that death is inevitable, but few properly plan for it. Even fewer start that planning early enough (think, adulthood). We tend to rely on our assumptions about what would happen, who would speak for us, take care of the kids, etc. Having a conversation with the people we want to handle these things is simply not enough, however.
So, what does the process look like? We start with a phone call or virtual meeting, called a consultation (ranges from 30 min to an hour, in most cases). During this consultation, I’ll give you a good explanation, in plain language, about what would happen to your family/property/stuff if something happens to you that day. So, if you have planning in place, we’ll talk about it. If you have nothing in place, we’ll talk about the State’s default plans for you. From there, you identify what bothers you about that process, if anything, and that guides the rest of our conversation. What YOU want. What YOU are comfortable with. In a way that makes it as easy as possible for YOU.
After that initial meeting, we may have one more call or meeting to finalize the design (think, your plan details like when kids should have funds released to them, if you’re planning for little kids as of now, or if you want Johnny to finish school before he gets his inheritance, etc), and then we will coordinate the signing of your documents! That’s it.
So, if you’re comparing the process of working with a local attorney (or at least one licensed in your state) with an online DIY type service, you should be pleasantly surprised to hear that working with me will be EASIER. You won’t have to guess when you’re filling in forms, you won’t have to wonder whether or not you made an error that could cost your survivors major time and money, etc. And, you have a go-to resource to contact when things change in your life that may require updates to your plan.
I endeavor to run a lean practice and to keep my overhead, and therefore fees, low. I’m well aware that cost is one of the primary factors for folks in either getting this important work done or not. I don’t want to give people the excuse of it “costing too much right now” to get what they need in place. When you have a plan you can trust, you have peace of mind and everyone deserves that.
That’s about it for now – Check back for more posts where I’ll go in depth about the areas of law that I help folks with, and address some frequently asked questions, etc. But, you landed here for a reason, so I would encourage you to schedule a call or Zoom consultation with me, where I can answer questions for you and explain your options. This is a no-pressure meeting where I really do focus on educating you on the likely practical scenarios in your specific case, and what the alternatives are, if you don’t like your current options. I meet with a limited number of people each week to ensure I’m providing a high level of individualized services, so book your consult today and I look forward to speaking with you soon!
